As for the countdown, the colonies etc can only hold 10 times their level in troops, so if you have a level 1 castle it can only hold 10 troops, level 2 can hold 20 etc. So if you've sent more than a castle can hold it will countdown. This is actually the key to the higher levels.
Level 4 was not too bad, try to conquer the whole right side first. I managed to hold my initial tower and one castle on the left, most of the time, while generating enough troops and money on the right side to upgrade these.
This is where being able to upgrade by controlling all the money makes a difference, as long as you always hold the right side, you could max out your troops at 150, while your enemy is stuck at 130. If you add one castle fully leveled to 10 that's 100 extra troops. It's actually a game of patience for a few levels.
I'm currently stuck around...idk tenish? It doesn't really give you anything to know what level you're on. The game gets frustrating as your given steadily less resources against stronger opponents.
Edit: finished that one and a few more levels. Probably gonna stop playing as it's turned into a click as fast as you can and hope you've got the right building game >>
