ive been in and looked at the box ciphers on wiki, but id done that before without anything sticking out- the closest i saw was something that had binary 1s an 0s as wrappers for the words, but i couldnt get this to gel either-still just as stuck

Do we now need to fill in the boxes with other letters? If so, . . . . er . . . I got nothing! I think the reference to cryptology ("a little more cryptic") and thinking outside "the box" could point to the use of a Vigenere square (or related) encryption method. However the standard Vigenere square does not contain pipes, so maybe "finding the box" means using an extended version of the square? Perhaps like the ASCII table?

I think someone might be onto something on the unfiction forum. It sounds like a good theory. This is what was said.....

I think that those letters are the first initials of a drop-down menu. N = New O = Open S= Save E =Exit

Thanks to speedracerx and mandybrook on this and the Unfiction forum for the guidance. It was indeed based on their earlier posts that I finally got 27.

Since I have expended so many frustrating hours on this level, I will give three hints that should point you to the right answer.

gives the information that should point you to the answer.

I hope I am not out of line on these hints, but this one was BRUTAL.

Hint 1:
Think word processing

Hint 2:
NoT pull-down, But...

Hint 3:
The answer is the same number of letters as the ?s, if you have a more recent edition of the source for the answer, there will be an option for "research" - be assured, R is not one of the letters in the answer
