When I married, all I knew about cooking I learned from my Grandmothers and my great grandmother. Mom didn't like people underfoot. Having guest was a BIG job for her - still is. Kids like to help - I helped my dad paint my Grandma's house and our house, raked leaves - he didn't mind people underfoot. So take time to teach your children and grandchildren about chores - and then play!

When my son was in college was invited to gal's apt for dinner and found out she didn't know how to cook! He was surprised. He ended up cooking the dinner. Good to know the basics. He went off knowing how to wash & iron his own clothes, do dishes, cook .. the basics.

Funny.

With 4 kids who started cooking about age 10 - cakes, cookies, yummies - I was always baking for school, their parties and it dawned on me. I worked as hard on my b-day to make it special. What! So when my eldest was about 14 decided to announce "on my b-day I will not run special errands, or cook or bake myself a cake .. it will be MY DAY!" They,hubby included, didn't get it - thus at dinner time there was nothing. I got in the car by myself and ate out. I had given them a weeks notice. We should have one day a year to call our own.

Do nothing day here today - my b-day! Made it another year! 2 of 4 kids have called. Did get cards from 2. Dinner almost ready or so hubby says. I do nothing on my b-day!

I'm in Florida - same time zone maybe? With kids all grown and living too far away, I have to do something with my time. dusting is not fun!
