Later on when you find the second peice you must use the thing you found before you entered the room where the second peice was, on the second peice, then collect it once your done that it should be straight forward

Got to

where it says 'this must be the final part' (or something) and there is a grid of red squares that when you click on them they go green. Completely stuck!

How do I progress from here?

@Mistery--It worked for me this morning. But, for some reason, the game made my computer's resolution all funky and everything's big!

Also, Heart--I think it was rather cruel to not change the cursor when we're over a hotspot.

Yes, if you leave the "Change screen resolution" checked, it will be changed (you can also uncheck it).
Should automatically change back after you exit the game.
