  • GamersHood Forums organizes Online Riddle Contest

GamersHood Forums is organizing an Online Riddle Contest.
For this purpose we are looking for persons who enjoy creating riddles and don't mind a friendly competition.
It doesn't matter if you are an experienced riddle creator or have never created any riddle before. Everyone is welcome to participate. Of course there are prizes to win: free Big Fish Games credits, T-shirts and other goodies, and not only for the riddle creators but also for the riddle players. More details about the prizes will follow later.

If you are interested in creating a riddle for the contest, please send a Private Message to GamersHood or one of the following moderators: Adventure, EscapeGirl, Kzin, old biker, tipper75 or Yvonne. In this registration PM, you should provide, as accurately as possible, the date that you will complete your riddle and have it ready to be played.

Important notes for the riddle creators:
    • The riddle must have a minimum of 15 levels and maximum of 20 levels.
    • The finished riddle must be sent to one of the above named moderators and may not be posted publicly - one of the GH moderators will do this.
    • The riddle is exclusive for GamersHood as long as the contest lasts. This means the riddle may not be posted on other sites until the contest is over. On the homepage of the riddle it must be clearly written that the riddle is designed for the GamersHood Online Riddle contest and that the riddle may not be posted on other sites until the contest is over.
    • If somehow the riddle gets posted on another site before that is allowed, the riddle creators are not allowed to give hints publicly on any site other than GamersHood.
    • Any technology may be used to create the riddle as long as the riddle is playable online and does not have to be downloaded.
    • The riddle levels may be edited to fix errors or to add extra hints if it turns out there is a need for it.
    • The riddle creators must be around frequently to help the jury to advance with their riddle when they get stuck. The jury should be able to finish the riddle to be able to judge it. For this purpose the riddle creators and the Jury get their own forum where they can communicate, ask for hints and post hints.
    • Riddle creators must provide a walkthrough of their riddle and send it to our moderator Adventure. This is a precaution in case the riddle creator cannot be around for a certain reason. That way Adventure can help out the Riddle Jury by giving them hints in the private forum and the Jury won't get stuck.

As mentioned above, there will be an official Jury who judges the riddle on certain points such as originality, logicality, design / lay out, etcetera. This jury gets their own private forum where they can discuss and evaluate the riddles.
The official Jury are all experienced riddlers who solved many riddles and maybe even have created a riddle or several riddles themselves. The GH moderators will contact people this month who are considered to be qualified for the job. If you are not asked, but would like to be a jury member and you think you are ready for this task, then feel free to shoot Adventure a PM with motivations why you would be a good jury member. Keep in mind, though, that we don't want to have too large of a jury. About 5 people should be enough.

It will not be only the official jury who judges the riddle, also all the players of the riddles may rate the riddles. Both juries have an equal voice in the final scores (50/50).

At the moment we can't give a precise date when the contest will start officially. This depends on when the riddle creators are finished with their riddles, but we hope that we can launch the contest in the first months of 2012.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to post in the following mentioned thread and we will try to answer all questions as quickly as possible.
    http://www.gamershood.com/forum/show...Riddle-Contest
If you have any questions about how to create a riddle don't hesitate to post in this thread: http://www.gamershood.com/forum/show...iddle-Creating

    Lets have some fun!

We got a few good questions from our participants we like to answer here, too.

Q: Is it possible to submit a riddle for the contest and be part of the official jury?
A: No, for several reasons we don't think it's fair to submit a riddle and to be part of the official jury. Even when you won't judge your own riddle. It's either or. However all riddle creators are of course allowed to play the riddles of the others and to rate them in the public polls we will set up for them.

Q: Is it allowed to team up and create a riddle for the contest with someone else?
A: Yes, it's allowed to team up and create a riddle together.

Q: You have set a minimum of 15 levels and a maximum of 20 levels. Are egg-pages considered as individual levels?
A: No, egg-pages that give you a clue whether you are on the right track or wrong track or egg-pages that give you an additional clue for the level are not counted as individual levels.

Q: Are so called sub-levels, i.e. level 1a and 1b, considered as individual levels?
A: When the sub-levels are obviously related, stay loyal to one subject and can't be solved without the other sub-levels, then the sub-levels of one level are considered as one level only.

    January 22nd 2012 update:

            January 29th 2012 update:

We are happy to announce that there is one more riddle creator who submitted a riddle to the contest. His name is jonthewatch.

Also we finally can set a deadline that all the contest's riddles must be finished and ready to be played: March 31st 2012.

This means that all riddles will be released on April 1st 2012.

Note: if any of the riddle creators need for some reason more time to get their riddle finished we could move up this deadline. But we don't expect this to happen because all current contestants estimated to have their riddle ready at least some weeks before April 1st. Therefore we think that 2 months will be still enough time for riddle creators who haven't subscribed themselves for this contest yet.

                    February 5th 2012 update

It's time that we are going to explain how we are going to decide who the winners of this contest will be.
As explained in post #1 of this thread it will not be only the official jury who judges the riddle but also all the players of the riddles may rate the riddles. Both juries have an equal voice in the final scores (50/50).
So how are we going to realize this?

                    The officially jury.

The jury is going the judge the riddles on the following points:
                    - 20% logic
                    - 20% originality
                    - 20% hardness
                    - 20% presentation and atmosphere
                    - 20% general impression

A few examples to explain the categories:
Logic: Was the solving of the levels logically? Did it involve guessing or not?
Originality: How original were the level ideas? Are the methods and ideas seen before in other riddles? Is it an common riddle method but wrapped in a originally package?
Hardness: Was the riddle overall too easy or too hard. Was it hard but were there enough hints to make it solvable or was it hard because there was a lack of hints? Was the riddle too easy because the riddle methods are trivial or were it the in-game clues that made it too easy?
Presentation and atmosphere: Visual clarity, visual integrity, lay out, coherency between the levels (like i.e. a theme or story line), a certain atmosphere that goes through the whole riddle.
General impression: this reflects the personal impression of a jury member. Was the general impression good and was the riddle enjoyable to play?

Each of the above categories will receive a grade from every jury member. When all grades are known we calculate the average. We sum the 5 grades and divide the outcome by the amount of categories to get a final score.
                    For example if the 5 categories give the grades 3 + 4.2 + 2.9 + 4.5 + 4.4 = 19 points. 19 / 5 = 3.8 = rating jury.

                    The players voting.

Each public riddle thread will get a poll and in this poll players can rate each riddle. Instead of a point system we use a star system, but the idea is the same. We add up all the stars that are given to a riddle and divide them through the amount of voters to get the end score of the players.

                    Final scores:

We add up both end scores and divide them by two.

                    For example.
                    End score Jury: 3.8
                    End score Players: 4.2
                    Final score: 3.8 + 4.2 = 8.0/2 = 4.0

The riddle with the highest final score wins the contest.

                          March 31st 2012 Update

It is official: tomorrow, April 1st, the GamersHood Online Riddle Contest will be launched.

Everything is set up and with that it is high time that we tell more about the prizes. Only one issue.. we need on last approval from our admin before we make officially known what the prizes will be. So we kindly ask to have a little more patience on this front. We expect to get a green light within 24 hours. However one advice in advance: make sure you read every lead post of a riddle thread carefully to know exactly how you can win one of the players' prizes. It can differs from riddle to riddle.

Apart from the prizes announcement, everything is ready to go.

We initially had 11 participants who were going to submit a riddle. Currently 8 of them have finished and subbed their riddle. There is still a good chance one person, linkinpark333, will present his riddle within 24 hours. That would make 9 riddles in total.

The 8 or 9 riddles that are ready to be played will be launched: Tomorrow, April 1st at 10:00 AM, GMT +2.

We have unfortunately a delay due to a vBulletin bug we didn't came across before.
The issue is that the threads won't appear to the public even when we approve them to be visible for everyone.

Because the bug couldn't be fixed we had to write new threads. But if correct all 8 riddles are up now.
PM me if there are any problems or if you spot any error. Thank you in advance. And our apologizes again for the small delay.
