The hidden latch? If you back track a little bit one of the floorboards/concrete strips in the tunnel can be clicked. I can't remember which one I just clicked all along the floor.

You don't need to use the inventory. Items are used automatically.

Finally got to try this game again. Travelled the basement, reread notes as view changes at least once, when you go back...or more is added.
Solved pentagram....when asked at picture, I choose to continue searching the house.
I carefully looked everywhere as I backtracked back to the house...only hotspots that I could not do anything with was the original views showing the couch, books, window and picture.
I see no other way out without exiting via the picture air vent and dying ...?
